Past Webmaster's Choices

June to July 20, 2000

Some people would really like to get into model railroading, but don't know how to get started, or maybe they simply don't have the room, the time, or the money for a large layout. A modular club may be your answer. It's a way to meet people in the hobby, learn the techniques, and get building and operating without having to build the whole thing yourself. Here are the web pages of LANTrak, the Lansing, MI, area N-Trak modular club. Be sure to check out their photos of the Dearborn Trainorama in the Photo Gallery section.

Webmaster's Choice: Aberfoyle Junction Now here is something a little different for the Webmaster's Choice. These folks even have their own gift shop. It is a well done website, Canadian and O gauge. Stop by and take your time exploring the Aberfoyle Junction 'O' Gauge Model Railway. This is a 1500 Sq Ft model railway depicting Southern Ontario in the late 1950's, including hand built models of the CN and CP. They invite you to visit them on their website, but make sure that you don't miss their real life display in Aberfoyle, just minutes outside of Guelph, Ontario if you are in the neigborhood. See their Shows section for dates, times and location information. So, visit the Aberfoyle Junction now.

Webmaster's Choice: TraiNternet I originally had another site in mind for this months Webmaster's Choice, but while browsing the web, I came across this one. From the home screen, you can make your choice of US English or French. This site requires the lastest version of your favorite browser with Java enabled and is best viewed at 800x600 or higher resolution. In a very few minutes, you will see why this is necessary.TraiNternet layout scene  It is primarily a photo based site complete with a section on how to shoot your models. Parts of the site are still under construction and other parts are a little slow in loading, but it is a striking site with photo spreads of three layouts. The layouts alone are worth the visit. So, take a few minutes and enjoy your visit to TraiN'ternet!

September 23 to October 23, 2000

Webmaster's Choice: Bear Creek The original HO Bear Creek & South Jackson Railroad is just slightly larger than 4'x8' but it packs quite a bit of scenery and operation into that small space. The Bear Creek is a free-lanced subsidiary of the Southern Pacific in late 1952 connecting the industrial town of South Jackson to the SP near Salem in the Cascade foothills of western Oregon.

While the BC&SJ site is not spectacular, The descriptions and the photography make this a site worth visiting. Be sure to take the 'Timesaver' link to see what can be done when you add a little scenery to John Allen's idea. Also, an added feature is the BC&SJ 'in the News'. With that, I hope you enjoy your visit to the Bear Creek & South Jackson RR!

Webmaster's Choice: John's Swiss Railway Site The home page opens to general information links, but scroll down the page and begin to explore the world of Swiss N Scale that John has put together. The more you look, the more you see and his site begins to unfold to you. The photography is good and soon you begin to wonder how he has done all of this in N Scale. It is definitely model railroading with a European flair.

Oh, and while there, don't overlook his prototype photo section. Many of the shots remind me of scenes you could see here in the U.S. some time ago! With that said, I hope you enjoy your visit to John's Swiss railway Site!

Webmaster's Choice: Tyco Trains For many of us it was Lionel, American Flyer or Marx, but for my boys and for many others it was Tyco, Life Like and AHM. For this month's featured site, I'll let Bob Waller set the stage. Bob said, "For me, it's a trip down memory lane. My first HO loco that I bought with my own money, I was 12, was a Tyco CB&Q SD24. It was a flakey running unit, but I loved pulling it apart and fixing it every other week. Darn, I now find myself missing my Bicentennial boxcars I bought for a buck back in '77. Getting old and nostalgic, I guess!"

Dump Accessory Well Bob, nostalgia is in and I still have a Tyco 2-8-0 on my layout. Of course it is powered with an Athearn SW1500 chassis, but it still came from that time and my grandkids love to watch it run. So, without further ado, let's take a trip back in time to Tyco Trains!
